The ceramic substrate, with its many cells for exhaust gas to pass through, purifies exhaust gas using catalysts coated on the cell walls.
The ceramic substrate needs to quickly activate catalysts and allows exhaust gas to flow with only a small pressure drop. To meet these requirements, DENSO provides:
- Thin-wall substrates with a lower heat capacity to activate catalysts more quickly.
- Hexagonal-cell substrates that reduce exhaust gas pressure drop with a smaller quantity of catalysts.

DENSO Technology – Leading the World
- In 1998, DENSO introduced the world’s first hexagonal-cell ceramic substrate. The hexagonal-cell substrate can reduce exhaust gas pressure drop as well as the quantity of catalysts coated on the cell walls.
- In 2000, DENSO introduced a ceramic substrate with the world’s thinnest wall (2.5 mil), allowing quicker catalyst activation to efficiently purify exhaust gas. In the thin-wall ceramic substrate, only a few cells in the outer radial section have walls thicker than other cell walls with the same porosity (35 percent), achieving high strength. Also, to prevent erosion, front cell portions where exhaust gas enters is made more solid.
- DENSO’s latest hexagonal-cell ceramic substrate, launched in 2003, has the world’s thinnest cell wall (3.5 mil) for this kind of ceramic substrate.
