Most Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF’s) are made of silicon carbide (SiC) however DENSO believes that the future lies in cordierite ceramic DPF’s. These provide lower pressure drop of exhaust gas, are light-weight, and are easier to produce compared to DPFs made of other materials such as SiC. This results in higher performance and significantly lower costs.
Silicon carbide DPF's have a higher thermal resistance, but DENSO can overcome this disadvantage with an effective and reliable system for particulate matter regeneration, the process whereby accumulated particulate matter is burned off using a catalyst.
