Head-Up Displays

The head-up display (HUD) provides drivers with virtual images of information such as vehicle speed, in front of the windshield. The system has many advantages:

  • It can shorten the driver’s eye movement time.
  • The driver can focus on the front of the vehicle, compared with conventional instrument clusters.
  • It’s easier for drivers to focus on the HUD, since the distance between the driver’s eyes and the image is longer than that of conventional instrument clusters.

DENSO Technology – Leading the World

  • In December 2003, DENSO introduced the world’s first HUD that can selectively show either information such as vehicle speed or night view system images. The night view system emits near-infrared radiation in front of the vehicle and detects the reflected radiation. This creates the image displayed by the HUD; helping drivers to see the view ahead in the nighttime.

Benefits and Features

  • Safely provides drivers with driving information
    • The HUD can shorten the driver’s eye movement time, compared with conventional instrument clusters.
    • With the HUD, the distance between the driver’s eyes and the image is longer than that of conventional instrument clusters, making it easier to focus.
  • High-quality image
    • The concave mirror, which reflects light from the indicator toward the windshield, uses progressive focus points –DENSO-developed technology– to provide a high-quality image without distortion.
  • High and uniform image brightness
    • The indicator emits light uniformly with high brightness toward the concave mirror, allowing drivers to see the virtual image, even in the daytime.
