Improved safety through enhanced driver visibility

Safety technologies such as sensors which detect and avoid danger and minimize damage have already become common practise. The next stage is to ensure that drivers have noted and reacted to potentially hazardous situations.

It is easy to miss road signs that are actually in the driver’s field of view. If a vehicle technology could read and alert the driver of road signs, such as no-entry or sharp bend, traffic accidents would decrease.

DENSO is combining eye tracking technology, which can recognise what you have or haven't seen, with image recognition, which extracts necessary information from images taken by a camera installed on the vehicle. There are various obvious applications, such as informing drivers about pedestrians in a blind spot or hidden behind another object, roadsigns which alert the driver of hazards, temporarily obstructed by larger vehicles, alerting the driver of an approaching vehicle which they might have missed.
