Variable Cam Timing Controller

The variable cam timing (VCT) controller adjusts cam shaft rotation relative to crank shaft rotation in accordance with amounts of oil in its oil chambers, controlling the opening/closing timing of the intake or exhaust valve. The amounts of oil in the oil chambers are managed by controlling the oil flow control valve in accordance with driving conditions.

By controlling the opening/closing timing of the intake and/or exhaust valves in accordance with driving conditions, engine performance is significantly improved, providing greater engine output, better fuel economy and reduced emissions.

DENSO Technology – Leading the World

In 1997, DENSO launched the world’s first vane type VCT controller composed of a housing and a simple vane, achieving quicker response, smaller size and lighter weight. DENSO developed the vane with stopper pins to fix the vane to the housing when the engine stops, preventing rattling noise caused by camshaft torque fluctuation at the engine cranking, while maintaining smooth operation after the engine starts.

Benefits and Features

  • Quick response
    • By adopting the world’s first vane structure, the VCT operates quickly in response to changes in oil conditions of the oil chambers.
  • Quietness when engine starts
    • The stopper pins for the vane securely fix the vane to the housing when the engine stops, preventing noise caused by cranking when the engine starts.
  • Small size and light weight
    • The newly developed vane structure reduced the size and weight of the VCT controller.
    • The housing and vane of DENSO’s VCT controller are made of aluminum, resulting in even lighter weight.
